View Full Version : New Old Estate Pipes, and a Quest Comes to an End.

Hi all. I've had a good week for new acquisitions without really trying. First off, I got a handful of estate pipes from a friend, including a blasted Stanwell Bamboo, an equally blasted Savinelli Punto Oro Billiard, a smallish Charatan Bent Bulldog, a small Royal Sovereign Lovat, and a rather large stylized Pot from Lorenzo, marked Matera on one side and Spluga (huh huh...huh huh) on the other. Nothing too fancy, but reliable companions that I'm happy to have and smoke. I haven't added this many pipes to my collection in one day since the Columbus show in 2003.

Though my buddy cleaned them up nicely, the Lovat had a persistent ghost when I smoked it yesterday, some sort of Lakeland thing going on. (I suspect it's a certain notorious OTC, but I'm afraid to say so. Mixture 79 is like Beetlejuice; if you say it's name three times, you wind up with a ghost that you can't get rid of.) It spent the rest of the day with a couple of cotton balls soaked with alcohol stuffed in it's bowl after a thorough scrubbing of the airway. None of the other pipes have any noticeable ghosts.

Speaking of the Columbus pipe show, I picked up my Calabash at that show and went to find a stand for it as soon as I got home (oddly, I didn't find one at the show). Though I did score a nice Savinelli stand that holds it under the cap, in the traditional manner, I really wanted a Decatur rest for it like my friend has (the same pipe-smoking friend who I got the pipes from). After nine years of looking, I finally stumbled across a used one at my local B&M this week, and I snapped it up in short order. Holds my 'bash perfectly, and though it will hold almost any pipe (it swallows most of them up), it also does a great job as a pipe rest for larger pipes, like my Big Ugly Nording and the newly acquired Lorenzo. It's a nice companion piece to my Decatur ashtray and pipe rest, too.

I know, you want pics. Despite my obvious lack of photographic equipment or talent, they can all be seen here: http://s585.photobucket.com/albums/ss300/tumbao2_bucket/Pipes%204-22-12/

Nice haul! And I like the calabash stand. Those are hard to find. I need to make a case for mine so I can take it with me. I don't smoke mine nearly as much as I should.

Thanks, guys. It's been a while since I've made a "haul", and it feels pretty good to have done so.

Sean, I actually found another stand like it on eBay just now. I guess I haven't been looking hard enough.

Thanks! I'd love to go to Chicago, but PAD has never been the worst of my afflictions; I'm far more addicted to buying tobacco. Right now, what little disposable income I have is being put toward an order from P&C (including a tin of Sillem's Black for my good friend who hooked me up with the pipes) and toward a nice rack for all these new smokers.

They have some awesome deals on tobacco at the show. I was at the meeting last night. You could probably offset what you spent on gas getting their with your savings on tobacco.

It would be fun to come and hang out, Brian, but I don't think I'll make it out this year. If you go to the show, be sure to look for a couple of my fellow Hoosiers there. I was doing a hangout on Google+ with Sasquatch and Wayne Teipen the other night, and Wayne said that he and Nate King are sharing a table at the show. He's got some nice looking pipes he's bringing along.

Yea I know I'm just kidding around with you. That's a long haul from Ft. Wayne. Gary Snookered me into going to the cpcc meeting last night. Had a good time & met some new people. I'll take some pictures & put em up
Take care
Brian

I would love too, but ebay and I do not get along. Actually, its paypal and I. I would love the Cob Bowl for my Kirsten, but cannot pay for it easily. Such is life. Thanks though!
