Unlike with a cigarette or a cigar, and unlike with that cheerful blue flame of a zippo, you never see what kind of combustion is going on in the nether regions of your pipe bowl when the ash builds up a good cap. You know that a good pipe smokes well when you have both established a routine in which both parties respect each other. A pipe may be emptied, but it is rarely discarded. Nobody has ever put a briar or meerschaum under their heel to stamp out an ember. When you smoke a pipe, you have faith in the promise a bowl holds whether it is is cob, clay or brylon. If you know how to smoke a pipe, you know how to smoke a pipe.

When a bowl of pipe tobacco burns evenly, it is a matter of texture and moisture, a matter of of ribbon and packing, and it is also a matter of leaving well enough alone. When you know your pipe, you know when it is lit. You know that when you need to relax, that is usually when the pipe needs to relax as well for a spell. The tobacco can rest and mature for awhile as it smolders a few moments longer in the hearth tendered in the pipe bowl. It takes a long time for a pipe to get snuffed. With a little encouragement on its last ember, a good pipe will get back to puffing quicker than Jimminy Cricket. Let your conscience be your guide. Has a good pipe every let you down? Trust your pipe to treat you right. It will, whatever it's made of, if it's a good pipe.

When you wish upon a star, you smoke in good health.
