I've taken a bit of a chance on this one. The seller described it as having a damaged stem, so I enquired further, he explained that there is a small bite-hole. On the basis that it is salvageable I bid and won anyway, the pipe looks nice even in this blurry photo:

Wish me luck when it arrives!

Blast looks real nice, stem should be an interesting challenge.

Nice one, Chiz! Even if the stem is completely trashed, stems for freehands shouldn't be that hard to come by, should they?

Cheers guys, I am relieved that you share my views on the good looks! Watch this space, I shall post further when it arrives. But it may be a little while, it is from a seller in Germany.

Well, it finally arrived, I didn't realise how big it would be, it's an absolute whopper! The stem isn't too bad, just a bit of chewing, a touch of superglue to fill and then sanding down should sort it out.

Sweet momma, Chiz! That is one honkin' hunk of briar. What a cool pipe! Wonder how many tins of tobacco she'll hold in that bowl???!!!

It is a biggun, Chiz, and totally cool! Just be careful if you decide to fill it with Royal Yacht; I think my head would be swimming if I did that.

Really like the ring grain on that one, the smooth ones kind of get lost in the crowd.
It's a good sized one all right but, there's some others out there that really need wheels.

How did I miss your Ben Wade post. I like the "before" 'pictures so much I can't wait to see the finished picture. Well done.

Thanks Tom. The stummel is actually in great condition, so with a gentle clean and polish it will be good to go. The admirable honesty of the seller in mentioning the stem damage probably kept the price down, but as I said I am confident I can fix that. I will of course post "after" pics when it's all done.

Chiz, this is better than superglue. It is rubber toughened, flexible and dries black. You can also buy a Cyano Activator which will dry it instantly with a quick spray:
