View Full Version : Favorite Virginia Color?

Virginias are my absolute favorite leaf, but there are Vas and there are Vas.

I'm not a huge fan of the more citrus flavored golden Virginias, although I do enjoy F&T Golden Mixture a lot, as the citrus notes are not as prevalent as in some. Brown Va is tasty to me, as in Ferndown Mild Brown. And red Va is fruity and lovely, as Wessex Classic Virginia demonstrates.

I guess I should try the Gold, Brown and Red flakes that Wessex have out, just to train my palate a bit more on the differences. And then there are are the blends, which no doubt combine some or all these styles in various amounts.

So what color Virginia do you favor? And which ones are in your usual blends? Curious...

I like mine FVF color down to a medium brown like Sunday Picnic…...

I love Virginia in all its forms, but I have to disagree with you Billy, at least visually, when it comes to colour (sic), cop a load of this beautiful SG Golden Glow:

That GG IS lovely, Chiz. When you're right you're right. Have to say that I like it's looks better than its flavor, though. Brown may be my thing.

Virginia is a wondrous leaf though, Billy, is it not? The visuals can be stunning, but the variance in tone is matched by the nuances in flavour. I could happily smoke straight Vas all day long, knowing that I would have much variety along the way.

Could not have said it better. Remarkable leaf. And when you compare McClelland with Gawith with Wessex with Pease with F&T... well you get the idea. Hard to hit bottom.

Here are a couple of quick shots of one of my favorites, McClelland Matured Virginia #27. The first shot shows the color a little more accurately, but I like how the flash in the second shot reveals more of the mix of colors present in the tobacco.

It's tough for me. I love some of the matured VA's that McClelland has, along with C&D... however my recent acquisition has become one of my top five straight VA's.

Hmmm. Last time I saw Veermaster (years ago) it was in a different color tin. Same stuff, I wonder?

Yeah, me too Billy. Good one, Herb.

I picked up a tin of Hamborger Veermaster last week and have really enjoyed it as my morning drive to work smoke.
Tangy stuff, for sure. I can see why many on Tobacco Reviews chalk this up as tongue bite. Dried, loaded lightly, and tamped even less, I like the sensation HV leaves on the palate.

If I had to pick one Virginia, it'd be red. Well, red/orange Va. that McC uses quite a lot of. I'm also very keen on GH&Co. darker coloured Va.'s.

Wow, Ally, that looks as dark as some of the twists from Sam Gawith. What's the flavor like? Sweet, grassy, smoky...?

Just like an Old Navy Flake Herb, medium to strong taste, more a smoky flavour an excellant Va, and a nice but not overpowering nic hit.
This stuff is helping me to gradually reduce the amount of Roll up's i smoke.
I would recommend this to anyone.

I have heard (although can't prove, because I haven't smoked it) that #6 is actually McC 2035 Dark Navy Flake.

If that's the case, you should give McC Dark Star a go. It comes in 50 and 100g tins. I'd be happy to send you some if you want.

Yes indeed a trickster ---- Bo didn't provide the tin scent either. I think Brian might have the correct one.
