I have had success with this thread in other forums. If you have a blend that you would like to try post it here and I am sure some generous member will send you a fill or two. The generosity of pipe smokers never fail to amaze me!!

This is just a guess, but when I send stuff overseas, I don't need to fill out a custom's form for anything under an ounce, so perhaps keeping samples to a bowl or two would be enough to give our friends across the see a sample with out costing an arm and a leg to ship and worrying about customs?!

Markw4mms
01-11-2012, 01:05
There are so many I'd like to try right now, but if I had to pick just a few they would be Haddo's Delight, Black House, Mississippi River, and the new Balkan Sobranie.

The sample is on its way :) !!!!

BTW - how are you liking that Sterling White Tail English?

Speaking of Sterling Tobacco (http://www.sterlingtobaccoco.com)- for those of you who may not know - you can request of a free sample of any of the blends...

He usually will send a good size. When I got mine he had also sent a sample of his "Bargain Blend" which is, in Bob's terms, a Parfait. Bunch of the blends just mixed together - it can be hit or miss, I liked the one I got, a friend of mine on the other hand, didn't.

Good test is red wine. If you don't get a migraine from red wine, you'll be safe on the Lat. From what I have been told, red wines and Lat both contain Tannins which are the migraine triggers.

Wyatt James
01-21-2012, 10:55
Yea, I really dont mind Red wines at all, actually enjoy the once in a while. Is there a "mild" Latakia blend anyone can suggest to take a jump into?

SG Squadron Leader (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=S&TID=1040), if you can get your hands on some.

Frog Morton Across the Pond (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=F&TID=2195)

Either Peter Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=E&TID=2600) or English Luxury (http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=E&TID=904). Readily accessible and inexpensive.

Rick, if no one has hooked you up yet shoot me a PM; I have a couple bowls left of three of the four blends you're looking for taking up valuable jar space in my stash (no Haddo's though).

Wyatt; I'll toss in a couple others to watch for. From McClellands, I enjoy the heck out of Three Oaks / Three Oaks Syrian, Wilderness and Orient 996...all of which offer mild Latakia flavours.
Both houses Gawith also offer some very nice, simple Latakia blends; if you like Lakelands, I would check out Bob's Chocolate Flake by G&H. Very mild Latakia, supported by Va's and Burleys with a light chocolate / floral casing.

Markw4mms
01-28-2012, 00:53
Haddo's Delight is one I'm looking to try soon. I've heard so much high praise for this blend, and I love VA/Per's so, I'm pretty sure it'll be a winner for me.

This is a cool thread guys. I have a bunch of open blends & am happy to share. My question is how do you ship it. Can I put a 1/2oz of tobacco in a envelope w/a forever stamp & drop it in the mailbox or do I have to go to the post office. I don't trade much but I want to change that.

Anything under 13oz can be mailed, over 13oz has to be tken to the post office. I mostly use manilla envelopes. I also have a digital scale, which everyone needs.

I think 13oz if you're sending first class has to go to the post office, at least that was the nice little signs in my post office say...Priority Mail on the other hand you can do from home and schedule a pickup.

The 13oz stipulation is for mail that has the postage paid with stamps.
If a USPS generated label is on the envelope or package you can drop it in a box.

Funny how there are so many I'd like to try, but the first two to come to mind are Sugar Barrel and Walnut. I'm sure the reason is that I only see them sold in those big tubs, and I'm not willing to buy that much of anything unless I've tried it first. Same was true of PA until I happened to spot it at a local grocery store in pouch format. Found it enjoyable enough to pick up a tub. I find it satisfying on it's own, but also good as a blender.

Good call, Ally - you've seen it on SF.

Sorry I can't help with the Navy Cavendish - smoked my last a while ago - OK but neither Navy nor Cavendish.

I'm on about the Bulk #2025 (which you wouldn't like as it contains Orientals); if you mean Bulk #2035 ( Dark Star equivalent) then you've had it re-named from Dick Silverman (RIP).

If it's the latter, I'll send you some.

Weird... Didn't even know this thread existed. Apparently ya can't see "Stickies" on Tapatalk.

Anyway, it doesn't look like it's to active now anyway but I will list a few tobacco's I can't seem to get my hands on. So sad that GQTobaccos is a thing of the past, so sad. : ( I had so many future tobacco orders to place with Glenn but those are now just forgotten TAD dreams... so sad... so sad...

Tobaccos I've always wanted to try:

RB Plug
Dark Plug Rum
Balkan Plug
Bracken Flake
Walnut Flake
Cannon Plug
Erinmore Plug

There are plenty more tobaccos I could name that are no longer in production but I'll spare ya the space it would take for me to write all those down.

Well I'm pretty new here and I guess I should post this here before going to the main forum.

About 15 years ago, just before I could buy tobacco myself, a friend of my father's got a blend from our farmers co-op called Mellow Moonshine (back when the co-op sold everything under the sun for rural Tennessee farmers). I remember it being the most divine thing I had ever smelled and I'm still trying to track this stuff down. Does anyone have an idea of where to start?

Based on your posted smokes I think you'd really dig the Ogden's Walnut, er, Original Flake (such a shame). Not that it makes any real difference, but my pouch is from older "Walnut" stock. PM me if you're interested.

I feel quite uneasy about asking for stuff but I have absolutely no chance of ever trying any of these disco'd blends unless I go this route. If you can help me out, please take advantage of anything I have in my cellar (some good stuff like HU, (newer) Motzek twists, Compton's of Galashiels, Esoterica, Germains, McQuaid, Revor); it'd make me feel much better about going about things this way. So I'm looking for some tough to part with dodo blends and therefore not really expecting to connect on any, but here goes nothing:

Motzek Strang
Velvan Plug
Erinmore Plug
Condor Plug
Older St. Bruno with some serious juice
Nessmuk Navy Plug
Curly Block
Orlik Brown Sliced
St. Bernard Flake

KarlMaldensNose
04-22-2017, 02:52
Condor Bar off the list thanks to a very cool gesture from Hawky. Also strike St. Bernard Flake from the list as I just learned that it is the same tobacco as Former's Straight Grain Flake, which I already have.

So there is no confusion here, in case someone doesn't notice my location, I am in Canada. That bit of info will likely put some off, but it shouldn't. I just sent out a few samples to a PSU brother in the States and it only cost me $3.50 as it fit into a bubble envelope, which means it's not subject to standard parcel prices, inspections, etc. Might not get to him before the rapture, but if anyone knows how to take things slow and easy, it ought to be us pipe smokers.

Thanks for letting me know. Last time I sent off a sample to Canada I put the samples in a small box and I asked for the cheapest postage possible... turned out to be $23! Then they made me itemize the "hobby supplies" and it just turned out to be a nightmare. It took me three trips the PO before I finally got it right. It was quite a stressful situation for me. I hear they're a lot more relaxed at the P.O.s in Canada compared to here. Hopefully this time around I'll have a better experience.
