Good morning friends,

The Lakeshore Smokestacks and the Downtown Toronto Pipe Club, are proud to announce the date and time of our annual fall B.B.Q.

Michael Parks has once again graciously opened the doors of his shop and home to host this event.

We have a tonne going on this year: Mike, Giovanni Placentile and Evan Wiseman will be holding an open discussion on the stages of pipe making, Mike will be offering studio tours, we'll have a Slow Smoke contest, a "Best Canadian" collection contest, raffle, and a catered luncheon.

Last but not least, there will once again be a Swap & Sell where folks can buy, sell, swap and swindle (okay not swindle) with each other to offload, update and enhance your pipe, tobacco and ephemera collection.

This year we are opening the event to pipe lovers from far and wide. We had thirty folks out last year, and would love to double the numbers this year; so if you can make the time, and find your way to Bowmanville on September 12th, we'd love to meet you.

Registration for the event is up and running here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/2015-fall-bbq-with-michael-parks-tickets-17763072829

Cheers,

-- Pat

Just a short event update, for those of you who are close enough to join us we'd love to have you.

We have locked down our agenda for the event on Septemeber 12th, and have confirmed prize donations for our contests, door prizes and raffles from Mac Baren Tobacco, Missouri Meerschaum, 4 Noggins, Pipes & Tobacco Magazine, SmokingPipes.com, Old Dominion Pipe Co., and Briar Blues. So it looks like we'll have a rich event with a little something to entice just about everyone to dig deep for the raffle, or enter the contests. I know for sure that one of the prizes is an unsmoked Castello Sea Rock courtesy of Mike at Briar Blues and another prize is an unopened tin of Murray's Erinmore Mixture, among the bevy of other goodies available.

Our schedule of events will look like this:
10am Event kick off! Tobacco and Coffee pairing, and on-site brewing; Swap & Sell; Best Canadian Collection, Carver and Shape Contest begins
11:50am -- Opening Remarks, Thank Yous and Kick-off of Workshop
Noon Pipe Making Presentation with Michael Parks, Giovanni Placentile and Evan Wiseman
1pm - Catered Lunch
2pm Best Canadian Contest Close and Prizes Awarded, Raffle Results Awarded
3pm Slow Smoke Competition
4pm Event Close

If you can make it, we'd love to see you in Bowmanville, Ontario, on September 12th. Tickets are still available here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/2015-fall-bbq-with-michael-parks-tickets-17763072829

Hey Bill, I'll confirm after our next conference call but I'm thinking that bringing a camp chair might be smart. Other than that, you'll just need what you want to smoke, sell or trade.

Wes, there will be a boatload of pictures.

Getting ready to set out for Michael Park's Studio armed with lots of tobacco and more than enough pipes. It's a cold, overcast day by our September standards and raining. But they tell me there are rain tents, along with a pipe contest plus a smoking contest. I'll try to get some pics on my phone and report back.

What a great day. A well run BBQ with huge benefits. We listened to three pipe makers and their successes, apprehensions and techniques to deliver pipes to pipesmokers that likely don't appreciate our pipe makers and what they go through enough. More talk later. Some photos.

One of the hosts and organizers thanks for a job well done Pat.

The pipemakers. Michael Parkes who hosted the event at his house in Bowmanville. The other gents are Gio and Evan ( I didn't get therir last names). They entertained us with off the cuff discussion about their passion, what they liked and didn't, favourite things to do and how they arrive at their creative juices to produce pipes for us.

On arrival we were booked in given a ticket for a draw, and got to choose one of a Missouri Meerschaum Indian pipe, a clay pipe or a tin of tobacco from MacBarren or C & D. Here's the table running out of stock.

Here two afficionados discuss the pros and cons of clay pipes. I have other photos to follow if I can find them on my phone.

It certainly was Ally. The crowd numbering in the 40's must have listened to the pipe makers speak for at least an hour ...just impromtu chatting and it was nice to get into their heads about their customers, traditional pipe shapes, creative shapes and limitations. The Gio guy was quite interesting about his comments producing stems and the choice of raw materials. They paased around samples of woods they used, stems materials, bamboo and explained dimensions of the final product. Pretty precision stuff indeed.

I must have taken 40 or so pictures but I also must have overblown the memory on my phone. So it appears that this is all I have to offer you. (Some may be relieved by that fact!)

Some briar getting ready to be a pipe.

A father and son sampling some of the many tobaccos available to visitors. I'm sure you agree a free bowl full is a good thing. Everyone was quite generous even sharing tobaccos that had been aged for many years. To be honest you didn't have time to sample all that were available.

I can't imagine what it would be like with 40+. Thanks for sharing the details and the photos. Inquiring minds want to know though. Which was it? Cob, clay, or tin?

I know Anthony ....at one point I said I had never seen so many pipe smokers in one place before - it was great. I had to leave at about 2:00 pm because it was my wife's birthday so I missed the pipe smoking contest and the other draw prize events as well as the pipe collection judging. To be honest I really didn't want to leave and I'll wager it likely went on for a good two hours or more maybe. A wonderful day that started at 10. I may be proud of my pipe collection but looking around the meeting yesterday the pipes were fantastic. I came away knowing my collection wouldn't win any prizes so I'm glad I didn't enter. Everyone was just great and very interesting to talk to.

I relieved the gift table of a tin of C & D 5 O'clock Shadow hoping that the rumours are correct that it is really 'Kickin Chicken' a blend made for a pipe club some years ago. I was going to take a clay pipe because I have never smoked one before but when I saw this tobacco I couldn't resist. I also remember breaking a clay pipe that belonged to my Dad when I was a young boy ...so maybe the karma wasn't good for that anyway.

I'm a little perturbed that a lot of the pictures I took are not on my phone. There are also some on the phone that I cannot download for some reason as well(?). I think I have overloaded my old cell phones memory

*RANTON* Ok, so I promise I'm not spamming the forum to try and increase post count... but every time I try to post pictures I am limited to two pictures per post. I don't know why. I find it exceedingly painful. This is the only forum I have this problem with. *RANTOFF*

As mentioned above, this last weekend marked the end of summer pipe fest coordinated by the Lakeshore Smokestacks and Downtown Toronto Pipe Clubs and hosted by Michael Parks. You've all read Bill's synopsis of the day so I won't go into greater detail than to say this... Hanging out with nearly 50 pipe folks for a full day was remarkable.

There was no ego... no machismo bullshit that so often mars a gathering of (mostly bot not entirely) men. Respect, camaraderie and enjoyment were the operating principles of the day. Yay!

To the pictures.

I would be remiss if I didn't take a second to thank the following folks publicly for their support of our event...

We received gifts or cash donations from the following stalwart members of the pipe community: Briar Blues, Smokingpipes.com, Pipes & Tobacco Magazine, Mac Baren Tobacco, Old Dominion Pipe Co., 4Noggins.com, Missouri Meerschaum, and BriarWorks International. Thanks to these sponsors, every person who attended the event went home with either a new tin of tobacco or a new pipe.

Thanks to Eric Mathurin of the Downtown Toronto Pipe Club for his tireless work as co-organizer.

Thanks to Giovanni Placentile and Evan Wiseman for sharing their knowledge and passion for pipe making with us.

Thanks to Michael for opening the doors of his studio and home to us for the day, and for providing the perfect backdrop for an event of this kind.

We're already planning next year's event.

Now you're just rubbing it in, Pat!

Seriously though, thanks for the pics. It looks like it was a great day for all.

Looks like it was a fun time... Most events like that are... Thanks for posting the pictures... It's always nice to see the brotherhood enjoying themselves with tobacco and pipes
