"Small tree sized examples of Erica arborea in Madeira."

I would imagine the raw wood used to make that cabinet cost quite a pretty penny.

I had been looking for a source of flat wood briar ever since this was posted. Studying the pics of the pipe cupboard it really doesn't look like a veneer, particularly since the edges are beveled. The internet only sells burl. So I called my friend at Peacock Lumber and as the name suggests he is the specialist in weird woods. I asked him about the availability of flat stock and he just laughed at me. And I've known him for 30 years - I was hurt. He told me he had never ever seen flat briar stock available.

It's hard to say how big those trees are and how much workable flat stock that could be taken out of the trunk but I'd bet more than one of those trees went into the making of that pipe cupboard. It certainly is an amazing oddity for that reason alone. I know it's worth what someone pays for it but now knowing about it makes it very special indeed. I'm sorry I can't see it directly.

I have seen asking prices for these Savinelli cabinets up to 1700$ but this pipe friend of mine sold it to me for 250$. Quite another price.

Bill, you're always welcome here in Denmark and see for yourself or I can take some close-ups. Save you the journey.

It is very cool for this reason alone, and I agree Bill, definitely not a veneer.
