Comoy’s Extraordinaire 499 Restoration [Pic Heavy]

This Comoy’s Extraordinaire 499 is the last pipe in the restoquadrilogy that began with these…

Its condition almost exactly mirrored the condition of the Extraordinaire 235 in the link above…

So, again, there really isn’t much to be said. Same issues, same procedure. Here’s the pipe.

I’m no expert on Comoy dating. I tend to focus more on the nuts and bolts aspect of these old pipes. So, keep that in mind when I say that one thing that I find interesting about all three of the Comoys in this batch is that the markings don’t match up with what I would expect to see. Quite the opposite, in fact. However, that discussion is probably best left to thread of its own.

Nice old pre-war Comoy's. I'm still in the COM camp, but I'll hedge to early post-war... I was thinking about it the other night in the context of the COM marking and seconds/private label pipes. Specifically...

There are lots of variables to consider; many of which are, as far as I know, unknown. I'm willing to accept that the COM stamp takes precedence over any contradictory markings when it comes to dating, but before I do I want to hear a reason why other than, "Well, that's how we've always done it."

Absolutely a fair comment (Anthony and I have talked about this at length!) It would be interesting to hear Jon Guss's thoughts on this.

Back to the 499, the pipe came out beautifully!

A beautiful job, Anthony! I really like the color of the finish. BTW, for my own education, what does "COM" mean?

After all of the statistics and reports are finished with, I've come to the conclusion that the only real danger of smoking a pipe is being interrupted.

Country of Manufacture, Russ. The "MADE IN ENGLAND" stamp on this pipe.

Got it. I think that I knew that already, but the ol' memory runs down sometimes. Thanks.

No worries, Russ. I'm convinced that the human mind has a finite capacity. So, whenever you learn something new, something that you haven't used in a while has to get thrown out to make space.
