ARGH!!! I'm gettin might tired o the nanny state! dp_nogd.gif

I wish the McNiel's well in their retirement and pray they find peace in their decision. The works of art they create will be missed.

Not a surprise but inevitable given that the McNeils weren't ever going to allow anyone else to make their product. Rumors had been going around for a long time. I've been aware of this since late last year, and others much earlier. The FDA business didn't play a role in it. Mike had major back surgery from years of hard physical labor and couldn't continue to manage the plant. Tobacco planting has decreased with the removal of price supports and subsidies. They weren't happy with the leaf that they were seeing. Simply put, it was time. There may, or may not, be a trickle of product yet to go out, but essentially they're done and are dismantling, with some of their equipment going to C&D.

    Thanks for that info, Jesse.

After all of the statistics and reports are finished with, I've come to the conclusion that the only real danger of smoking a pipe is being interrupted.

This is hard news to take. Apparently they’ll be tinning and still selling out the whole warehouse of what they have, who knows how long that will take. Mac Baren is still fully stocked on Vintage Syrian. Does anyone have 500 tins of Tudor Castle?

We can't buy the McClelland tobaccos here in Europe, but a pipe friend sent me a sampling of '5100' and I liked that a lot.
It is always sad when tobacco firms stop production no matter their unavailability here and I do wish Mike and Mary McNiel a long and happy retirement.

Yes, but if I divulged who, my body would wind up in a cement kimono...

Also, my sources, who have been right on target up to now, told me that there isn't that much stock left to tin. The warehouse is empty.

I've just read somewhere that about 100.000 tons of Syrian Latakia are warehoused in a salt mine below Cheyenne Mountain.

Went to my local pipe shop last night after work...Picked up 2 small tins of Frog Morton Original ($12.25 ea.) and a 1 large tin of Cellar ($22.50)...Talked to the manager and he said that they had sold 75% of their stock in the last 2 days. I have looked online and while there is still Original to be had to a degree, Cellar is hard to find. Now, I don't know if I want to open one of the tins of Original or not!

Sigh, I will probably wait until I finish the tin of BB1938, then open one of the Originals...it sucks coming in at the end of an era.
    Take care and check six!

Imagine running a business and establishing a brand like this and letting it go. The McNiels certainly are committed to their reputation and will not entrust it to a new owner. Quite remarkable really. Reputation over money - I don't think I've ever seen an example of this before.

Quite remarkable, indeed, Bill and McClelland is now a famous name in pipe tobacco history. For some years I've smoked their great VA flakes regularly and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity.
