    Cold fear, part 2...

I realized last night that if I am to realize 240 lbs. of tobacco in storage by 2021 (when the next round of FDA regs kicks in), I'll need to purchase five lbs. per month. That's assuming that I already have enough on hand to carry me through those four years. Not going to happen. I'm going to have to consider seriously reducing my tobacco consumption, say 4 oz. per month, or face the very possible reality that at some point I'm just going to run out and have to give it up. That's quite a sobering realization.

I got a letter from Lt. Dan, he said, "We got more tobacco than we're ever goin' to need". I said "Good, one less thing to worry about.".

That is a harsh helping of reality. I say just do your best and realize that the future can hold all sorts of surprises. You don't have to prepare perfectly for the next 40 years just yet. Though if we could we would all sleep more soundly at night.

After considering this a little more, I think it's doable. If I forego the bowls that I don't really think about, like those that I'm just puffing on while I'm working, I could really cut my usage down to somewhere near that 4 oz/month limit. It would be a little painful during the adjustment period, but the bright side would be that each bowl that I do have would likely be more considered. Hmmm... Gotta think on this some more. I don't want to suck the joy out of the act by turning it into a mathematical equation like some Weight Watchers program, but if some belt tightening or, in this case, bowl lightening will increase my chances for future enjoyment then I'm game to give it a go.

I havenít commented on it, but Iím enjoying pipe smoking a lot more with 2 pipes a week than a year ago, when it was 1-2 pipes a day, and I was suffering from tongue burn. I started smoking less because I was developing a dry cough, which is now gone. And I am definitely suffering from mild COPD, which might reflect my former 55 years of smoking cigarettes. Smoking a pipe twice a day was not helping the COPD either. So 4 oz/month sounds like more than I could handle now, or would even want to.
