    Here we go.

After all of the statistics and reports are finished with, I've come to the conclusion that the only real danger of smoking a pipe is being interrupted.

The are quite a few leaps of rationale in that statement.

    Jack and Jill
    Went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
    Jack fell down
    And broke his crown,
    And Jill came tumbling after

It is clear, when viewed through this lens, that water is a major contributing factor in traumatic cranial damage among youths and young adults.

Translation: We've already made up our minds to further regulate tobacco with the goal of destroying an entirely legal industry and trampling on your freedom to make informed choices, but we're going to pretend to do science for a few months while we cherry-pick data that supports our predetermined conclusion.

Meanwhile, we'll continue to rubber-stamp approvals for new prescription drugs based solely on their manufacturers' "research" and all the money they're forking over to the politicians who appoint us.

We all agree that there is a great deal of "mommy knows best" politics the general problem is that the tobacco lobby now has little influence because of public sentiment. People have been convinced that tobacco is bad for your health. I know in my locale smokers are the minority and are looked down upon. My pipe smoking publicly draws curiosity but still in the end is recognized as unhealthy.

I was actually surprised that I saw this article as timely as I did. But the irony was that it came across a Canadian news wire that was shortly followed by an article explaining how marijuana should be packaged when it is brought in LEGALLY. I wonder what toppings are approved for that commodity?

Anyway gentlemen let's just celebrate that we are members of a dying breed.

Although the cover story is about vaping, we know the bureaubots at the FDA are always attacking all tobacco in all forms. Drunk drivers kill more people than pipe smoking. But, of course, we will remain an easy target as long as the pipe and cigar tobacco industry doesn't publicly fight back.

They have as much as they are capable. The problem, however, is twofold.

First, the court of public opinion has already been won over by the opposition. If it were even possible to sway the public back into acceptance of tobacco use, it would take years of work and lots of money to make it happen. Most of the players in the tobacco industry don't have much of either to spare.

Second, the tobacco industry is fractured and each faction has shown themselves to be completely willing to throw the rest under the bus to save themselves. So, the cigar manufacturers dismiss the pipe tobacco manufacturers and the cigarette manufacturers dismiss both. The companies large enough to have a hand in all of the categories are only interested in preserving those that generate the most revenue (read: cigarettes and non-combustibles).

Gather ye pipe tobacco while ye may, gents.

That's a good analysis, Anthony. If it is a situation of every company for themselves, then divided they shall fall. But is the pipe and cigar industry giving up on its future or simply waiting for further developments? Let's see where this goes.

No, but it's a bit like trying to bail out a sinking ship using a drinking glass. The small manufacturers (which includes pretty much every pipe tobacco producer) just don't have the capacity put up the kind of fight necessary for a possible victory. They do try though and they've won small victories, but not nearly enough to preserve their future.
