Do we know who paid for this "study"...? I think I would trust the views and opinions of Dr. Chris Haslett on these matters.

In mathematics, the factorial of a non-negative integer n, denoted by n!, is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n. For example, The value of 0! is 1, according to the convention for an empty product.

WHERE IS THE DATA? Hard to publish a study like this without some verification.

    And I always loved the fact 0 = 1 !!

Bill, there are data in the main body of the paper, but many people only read the abstract, which the Beeb latched onto.

My points about the groups chosen for the study still pertain.

A very good question, and I know what you are getting at. Not always easy to track down the root source with certainty, but I shall investigate and report back. I'm not up to date on this, but as far as I remember, universities are discouraged from accepting funds from the tobacco industry/lobbyists.

EDIT - A couple of the investigators are funded by the British Medical Research Council and the British Lung Foundation, but it does not state that these pukka funding bodies paid for the actual study.

Under Competing Interests it states "None Declared"

If indeed the MRC/BLF did pay for the study itself, I can only think that it is in relation to concern about the current vaping vogue in young people (possible deleterious influences itself, and that vaping may lead to cigarette smoking or possibly other drugs), rather than the appropriate use of e-cigarettes as an aid for adults who are desperately trying to quit smoking.

Smoking/vaping in the community is not my field of study, but I will see what colleagues think of this paper and what is the current thinking on the general topic.
