What would be the point if it has no taste though? I was under the assumption that you use a liquor to clean it for that "tang" while smoking.

That seems to be the consensuses, It only lasts a smoke or two. Which again makes me wonder, is it worth it?

Yes I agree Dave! I actually smoke a flavor called "Evening Rum" most regularly and I have never found myself wanting to clean my pipe with rum.

It removes rank juices, stale saliva, tars, gummy residues, and "sweetens" your pipes.

It's cheap, it works, and the Rum Extract is easily found. BTW, it doesn't ghost the pipe either with chemical flavors, and it dissipates when smoking the first bowl full. I've been using it for years without any problems. I keep a small bottle of this stuff in my travel kit for pipes along with the other requisite paraphernalia.

Thanks for the advice Frank, does this extract usually run on the higher end on the price scale? Also, how many smokes do you usually get out of it before the flavor is lost?

No, the alcohol, be it isopropyl or a spirit, dissolves the accumulated tars in the airway. It's why a pipe cleaner from a dirty pipe comes out brown/black. And why it would be more efficient to use 90% Iso than an 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) spirit to clean a pipe.

I agree with Tom that it's unnecessary for me to clean my pipes with alcohol on any regular basis. His cast iron skillet analogy is spot on to my mind. I even go so far as to avoid running a cleaner down the airway of a new pipe until I've smoked at least a dozen bowls in it. The shank needs seasoning too methinks.

That being said every two or three years I give my pipes a somewhat less than thorough alcohol cleaning just to rest easy on the issue and to make sure my airways are basically open. When I do I always use Everclear, a drinkable high proof spirit that is more or less neutral in flavor. It always takes a few smokes to get the pipes back to delicious again once they're cleaned.
