A question re army mount stems

My recently arrived Sasieni pipe has an army mount and it is a bit loose.I dont think the pipe has been smoked for quite a while.
Is it likely to tighten with smoking or is there a remedy?
    thanks

Whoa boy...you need to hear what Anthony has to say. He has dealt with a few old British army mount stems... For some good reading (and some of the issues) see here,

Then there was the one with a crack in the Sterling cap, the best pieceof equipment to fix it in situ was a laser welder, cost for the equipment $10,000-15,000. Needless to say that option wasn't pursued! I haven't heard much about that pipe recently (not mine)...

How loose are we talking about, Paul? If you were to dangle the pipe by the button with the bowl facing the floor, would there be any danger of the stummel falling off on its own?

    Hi Anthony
the stem grips ok but sort of rocks slightly if I push it front to back almost like it is on a ridge not touching along all of the taper.I pushed it gently in and smoked a 1/2 bowl and it didnt fall off and seems to have swelled a bit as the rocking has reduced a bit.I plan to smoke it some more before doing anything

That would be my advice. Report back after about half a dozen smokes and let us know where she stands then. If necessary, there are a couple of non-invasive methods I can suggest that might tighten things up, but for now, just smoke it and see where that gets you.
