That's very interesting, Jorgen. When I was studying history at school, my allotted period was from 1970 (the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War) to 1914. As well as Germany gaining more power, so too did Austria-Hungary. Max Hastings, in his wonderful book "Catastrophe", shows that WW1 was inevitable because A-H were determined to gain more territory, Archduke Ferdinand's assassination being a 'deliberate' excuse.

"Catastrophe" is a fantastic read for anyone interested in this sort of thing.

Also, maybe of interest... Dan interviews historian and author, Peter Hart, in his Addendum series (exploring things that are related to the proper HH series): https://dchhaddendum.libsyn.com/dchh...-the-great-war

They discuss the lack of accessible studies of WWI.

    Shorely you jest, sir!

Such is the depth of my ineptitude that I am unable to fix my own posts, never mind find a past thread!! LOL

If the kindly Dave, or anyone else, is unable to help us out I will redo it tomorrow when I smoke the pipe - Bertie will be first or second up.

I hope this works; if it does it will be a fitting end to this thread.

The link below will hopefully take you to a BBC I-Player film - "They Shall Not Grow Old", made by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings film series fame). It lasts more than an hour, and the integration of all the footage and the astonishingly realistic colouration of the WW1 clips can only have been a massive labour of love - it has taken the UK by storm.

It is both fascinating and utterly horrifying.

Note, the BBC will take down this masterpiece at the end of this week.

EDIT - plenty of pipes in this!! AND a tin of Fray Bentos!!! LOL
