The Missus, Pipes, Accessories and Me - Tough Love!

I often slag off Her Indoors, but truly, she is not so bad for a Scottish nurse!

The missus knew I was a pipe smoker when we met; she did not exactly approve but she knew it was a part of me that is immutable.

When we moved to this house ten years’ ago, it was summer and I smoked only outside. The winter was a cold one and I was then permitted to smoke in the ‘utility room’ (the dog, the washing machine and me). There was no heating, but if I wrapped up well in my furs, it was bearable.

The night I was discharged from hospital after a relatively minor abdominal operation, but still under the influence of medications, she found me at 02.00 happily smoking my pipe when the temp was -5 Celsius. I was ordered into the kitchen/dining room where, to this day, I smoke my pipe at the end of a large mahogany table at which I also work on the laptop.

However, it didn’t end there. That April she bought me a birthday present:

I would love to say it was the Dunhill lighter, ash bowl/stand or pewter double pipe rest. I would have been happy with the ‘trench art’ barrel for my pipe cleaners, or even a packet of pipe cleaners, but no – it was the wooden tray, with the comment, “Get all your shit off the table and keep it on that tray!”

    ………………………..

So, life went on until my birthday earlier this year.

When I returned from a solo (sad old bastard’s) vacation in Gran Canaria, she said, “Your present is in the utility room – take a look.”

While I was away she had built me a very large pipe rack (I am partial to big racks) with her own hands, being very gifted at DIY and the like.

At that moment, I thought she loved me…………….until she said, “Now put all those smelly old pipes and other people’s old shit on those racks!”

Not fishing, but would be interested to hear how other pipers get on with their ‘Those Indoors’.

...and now you're in, to prevent you having to lie on your side to smoke:

Resized the one you sent me with Microsoft Picture Manager (PSU maximum is 2200x1650 pixels); thought I'd done it in my e-mail attachment but the fact that it's portrait rather than landscape probably buggered it up.

Reposted the image but can't delete the original.

    Lucky sod!!

My missus gave me a shoebox to keep my "things" in....makes sense I suppose as I don't exactly have much to store. She doesn't mind me smoking my pipe in the house though. In fact she likes to see me smoking it as she thinks it's very British.

No problem with my missus either, she's only too happy that I stopped the ciggies, every time I see a nice pipe though I still get the (haven't you got enough bloody pipes).
