    Barling's Make YOW EL

The Christmas pipe (from the vault). Finished it up very early Saturday morning. It's post-war, one of those pipes without a shape number, ony the EL size mark. Sorry the pictures are so dark...I'll include one that's overexposed from when I finished it around 4 am on Saturday. A classic ye olde English billiard, it is in excellent condition; no topping, no staining, just cleaned up, polished, and waxed.

Giving it smoke #3 right now with some desktop Va/Per. To quote Jesse Silver,

"While many find the grain to be beautiful, this was not the aim of the Barling Company, and many of their pipes have rather unremarkable grain. The Barling Company’s intent was simple, to create the finest smoking instruments in the history of the world. Many connoisseurs believe that they achieved that goal admirably. In addition to the smoking qualities of their air-cured wood, the Barling Company outfitted their bowls with hand made stems that many consider to be the most comfortable ever created. Their engineering is beyond reproach. Over the...years the company gained and maintained an enviable reputation for the excellent smoking characteristics of their pipes"
That sums it up very well!

The last picture really shows the pipe off, Dave. The polishing really made the bird's-eye grain and finish color look just superb. Fine job, I'd say!
