    W.O Larsen Select (107)

From smokingpipes estates, the only smooth version of this shape I've ever seen.

    The box arrived today...

Good thing I also bought some bulk tobacco...

The shape is the Sven Knudsen designed 107, while this was a "Catalog Shape" one can see these Larsen pipes were very much hand made, artisan pieces. The 1963 W.O Larsen catalog 107 image, and the two other versions of the shape that I have been lucky enough to find.

This pipe's shaping is somewhere in between the two older sandblasted versions. Note also the transition above and below the shank, and what looks like just a little more wood below the shank to the bottom os the stummel.

Very fine Larsen, Dave. Congrats! Did the box come smashed up like that upon delivery?

Yes it did, but everything inside survived.

That's something to complain about, I think. I've never known them to send out a box closed up with anything else but clear shipping tape well fortified on the inside with crumpled up brown paper.

Oh, it did have the brown paper (I've saved lots of it, works well to start a fire in the fireplace!). I should say, in defense of UPS, that this was the first box that ever arrived like this.

I much prefer the smooth version Dave.

It's so nice I could sit and look at that grain all day. Great find.

Unusual....as usual, Dave. I like it! The perfect sitter for the stylish gent at his desk.

Always order more tobacco. Lesson learned.
