What Causes A Pipe To Gurgle?

My new Baraccini churchwarden is gurgling. Thought it was because of my spital falling into the top of the stem, but it wasn't. Then I thought it was the hole size at the end of the shank inside the bowl So I stuck a drill bit (a snug fit) and gave it a few swists. But that wasn't it either. Now I just want to smash it on the ground. it buggs the hell outa me. Anyone know how to stop it.?

It could be any number of things, Angel. Gurgling can be the fault of the tobacco, the pipe, the smoker, or a combination of any of those. If I get a gurgle, nine times out of ten it's my fault. I either got impatient and didn't dry the tobacco enough or I've been absent-mindedly smoking too fast. Try drying the tobacco a little longer and smoking a little slower in that CW to see if that makes a difference. If not, the fault is probably in the engineering of the pipe.

Moisture level of your tobacco...you would be surprised. Do a little experimentation letting the tobacco dry out to varying degrees.

Try countersinking the tenon (by hand) - that well improve the airflow dynamics.

I know how you feel Angel. I've got a Peterson system that gurgled from day one. Got to the stage I was embarrassed to smoke it in front of anyone so I just gave up. After reading the advice here I may give it another go.

Ceawford, I sometimes cut a long thin piece of emery cloth and fold it and put it in the hole at the lip end and twist so long down you can come. That use to help. To little airpassage are sometimes the problem with moulded stems.
I have done this on some peterson systems lately with good results.

Peterson's can be easier to smoke and to clean when you drop a filter crystals into the well/sump. Soaks up most of the moisture, so no dripping can occur while cleaning the pipe. I have the crystals around anyway because I use them with most of my pipes, but a piece of cotton ball may do the same. I think I have read about people using them for this purpose.

Thanks guys for your input. Lots of useful info here. Drying out my tobacco first I will do from now on. I'll keep playing with it until I get a cleaner draw without the gurgling. Got something to go by now. I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks again guys.

Never heard of filter crystals Markus........I have now.
