Do you match tobacco to a certain pipe?

Assuming you have more pipes than common sense would justify ....and.... more tobacco than Virginia....

Do you reserve certain pipes for specific tobacco?

Or do you grab a pipe and stuff whatever's in your stash or your yard and light it up?

I used to, or at least I tried to. When you have too many pipes, it's easy to forget what pipe was reserved for which blend. Now I don't worry about it, it's all good. Ghosts come & go & keep me guessing.

    Hello,

when I had just about stopped smoking aromatics and smoked only Virginias and Latakia blends, I split my pipes between the two. That was mainly because some pipes handled Virginias better than others, and the others handled Latakia well enough. But when I started mixing myself, I stopped bothering to dedicate pipes because the mixes smoked about the same in any pipe, in a good way. If I now smoke something like Ennerdale straight - rarely happens - then I use a Falcon, but when there is just a bit of such a Lakeland aromatic to flavour other tobaccos, I don't care. I might make sure to smoke something else when I next use the pipe in question, so the flavours don't build too much, but generally I choose a tobacco and a pipe without thinking hard about the pairing.

    Best wishes
    Markus

That is a good one "more pipes that common sense would justify", yes and as Simon I just smoke.

Not really. Easy to do when you hardly have any of either. 😁

Guilty, I'm afraid - very guilty!

I have about 120 pipes and I know them all. Some years ago, I found that I loved SG FVF/FVP and that they suited a G-grade Upshall of mine - so the partnership began. That pipe has now smoked thousands of bowls of FVF and I swear that blend tastes better in that pipe than in any other. Soon after, it was BBF in another G-grade Upshall - same result.

These days, only the very best single blends get pipes dedicated to them. Off the top of my head:

    - GH&Co Dark Flake/Plug -- three Dunhill Shells and a 50's Stanwell

    - HH ODF -- an Orlik Old Bond street

    - Germain's RDF -- a Peterson Centenary, a 50's Stanwell and an 1889 Loewe

    - Revor Plug -- a Comoy's Blue Riband and a Charatan's Make "Selected"

    - HH Bold Kentucky -- a 50's Stanwell

    - Fine VA's generally -- a Dunhill HT Collector and an Astley

    - SG 1782/Cob Plug -- a pre-Rep Peterson.

Then, I have a number of pipes that only smoke lat blends (I really don't like ghosts in my other pipes)

The bulk of my herd can smoke anything - but I don't let them near lat blends or anything vaguely resembling a blend with Lakeland Essence.
