I read a sudden sandstorm crosswind caught one side of the ship. If so, then probably just bad luck.

I think we won't know all the circumstances until a thorough investigation. One of the issues will be the ship's speed. Transit speed is supposed to be 8 knots, it's been reported the ship was doing 13 knots.

I'm sure they'll 'kick arse' if they find rules were broken.

My brother's a retired Merchant Navy captain and has been through there many times....as well as the Panama canal. I seem to remember him saying small trains used to pull ships through certain parts of the Panama canal.
