    Estate Briar Pipe, Barlings???...

Title of the thread is exactly the way the pipe was listed. From the listing, "We have a vintage rusticated (sic) Briar tobacco Pipe, with a fishtail mouthpiece. We believe this might be an old Barlings Pipe. The nomenclature on the bottom of the bowl seems to have been mostly buffed out long ago, leaving a ghost image of the Barlings curved logo lettering, along with more ghost lettering." EBay's current software for viewing pictures is awful, terrible, almost defeats the purpose of having pictures, because you can't zoom in...as you can tell I don't like it. You basically have to copy the pics to your computer and then zoom in. I can faintly see the beginning of the arched Barling's Make, Ye Olde Wood, and Fossil. A Nice canted pot shape, I would say this is an older pre-transition Barling's. It will be interesting to look at the markings with a loupe to get a sense of the dating. Not a bad deal at $36!

    Hi Dave,

Very nice score. The stem looks exactly like a pre-trans stem should look. On a Mac, you can zoom in the desktop view or the browser page view, so I used that to study the pix. I thought that I could see thee remnants of the "ye olde wood" stamp. I have no idea what the pipe is covered in, it almost looks like salad oil. It's an unusual shape for sure, and if it cleans up well, you will have made one heck of a good deal for yourself. Congrats!

Dave, if you hold in the Ctrl key, you can zoom in and out on your browser with your mouse wheel.

It certainly looks like a Barling. I am nearly sure I have seen that slight canted pot shape before.

Thanks Alan, I just learned something! For this pipe, the relevant picture really needed to be rotated 180 degrees. A good thing to know when looking at hallmarks!

That sure looks like a Barlings stem, heck of an eye and grab!

Plus, Alan, thanks for the tip on the CNTRL key/mouse for enlarging photos, that works like a charm!
