    Meerschaum Handling?

I have heard of different ways people handle their Meerschaum pipes. White glove on the smoking hand, hand washing ritual before handling the pipe, or holding by the stem. Myself, I just treat the few Meerschaums I have just as I treat my briars. I don't care about the coloring process, all that interests me is how the pipe smokes. How do you handle your Meerschaums?

    Usually by the stem only.

I have only one meer at the moment...my "camera" meer. I handle that one after washing my hands, because it's too heavy to just clench and it's actually a little heavy/awkward to handle by just the stem. But also, I don't mind handling it by the hands that even if I smoked it 10 times a day for the next 50 years, that pipe is so thick I don't think it would still color very much :) !!!

My next meer though, I want to be a bit more diligent with, because even with the hand washing I can see how handling a meer affects the coloring.

I bought my meers to smoke & they smoke great. Any coloring or discoloration due to handling only adds character to the pipe.

First and foremost, it is a PIPE. If it gets grungy from my grubby paw, a damp paper towel cleans it up. Yes I do enjoy watching it color. I also enjoy how my cobs look as they color. But mostly, I enjoy the pleasant smoking experience of each. :bull_head:

Not sure I would call it a "ritual"...not that anal. But I do try to smoke my meers with clean hands. That way, I'm comfortable in the knowledge that I'm not transferring dirt/ashes into the warm wax. Other than that, I smoke/handle them much like I did my briars......when I *HAD* briars!

I'm old school on this issue and avoid touching the Block, especially when it's hot. I use clean white cotton wash cloths
that I get cheap at Dollar General and use them to handle the Pipes, buff the Beeswax and clean the soot off the bowl's
plateau. I've been doing this since '69, so it comes second nature to me. I know that I'm in the minority on this issue but
it is the choice I'm comfortable with. This is part of my chosen Meerschaum experience.
